The JS1 was based on the Radius series with some minor modifications to the body shape. It features an American basswood body with bolted to a maple neck with a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot position markers. Components include DiMarzio pickups, a double locking tremolo bridge and Gotoh tuning machines. The controls consist of a master volume pot with a push-pull high pass filter, a master tone with a push-pull which splits both humbuckers and a pickup selector. Significant changes were introduced in 1992: a middle single coil pickup was added along with a 5-way lever pickup selector replacing the 3-way toggle, the new Lo-Pro Edge tremolo replaced the original Edge trem and a matching headstock was added. These models late-model JS1's are the only JS models introduced to date (as of 2019) with a middle pickup. The JS1 was replaced by the JS1000 for 1994.
