1958 Fender Duo-Sonic refin desert sand
Made in USA
Very Good condition, 7/10, Made in USA, including the original 1950s brown hardcase with yellow lining, 21 frets and a 22,5 inch scale, the nut width during 1958 gradually became narrower and went from 1 5/8" (41,27mm) to 1 1/2" (38,1mm, the A-width), this one is 1 21/32 inch or 42,28mm so on the wider side which is usually preferred by most players, the neck is pencil dated 4-58 (April of 1958), the neck plate has a 1960 serial number so it is not original to the guitar, original frets (with some fret wear) and possibly even the original nut, refinished (with laquer in both visible nail holes in the top) in a darker and more grey/green Taupe finish than the original Desert Sand which was the only color these came in back in the late 1950s, mostly original parts including the finish on the neck, the gold logo (unlike the earliest 1956/1957 silver logo), the single string tree, the pickguard with aluminium shield and every pickguard screw except one modern screw (yes, details but if we see it we describe it), both pots that are dated 45th week of 1956, the red Astron Type AM Molded Paper tone capacitor, the 3-way black switch, the bridge with the era-correct threaded saddles, the metal volume and tone knobs, the neck black bottom pickup but we believe the bridge black bottom pickup is era correct but from a different guitar as it has shorter leads that have been spliced and it is cleaner than the neck pickup, also the tuners have been replaced with later 1964-1969 double line Kluson Deluxe tuners with the bottom side stamp D-169400 PATENT NO and off white tips, and it is also missing the bridge cover, more info: Original design (19561959) The Fender Duo-Sonic was introduced in 1956. Like the Musicmaster introduced a few months earlier, it featured basic but effective construction and a 22.5 inch scale length (standard Fender guitars feature a 25.5 inch scale) and cost $149.50 (equivalent to $1,675 in 2023). The original model was only available in a light tan color called Desert Sand and had a maple fingerboard with 21 frets and a neck with a soft-V profile. The original model Duo-Sonics also sport a gold-colored, anodized pickguard that helps in screening the single-coil pickups and electronics from interference.
