Good condition, 6,5/10, Made in Fullerton, CA, including very beat up 1960s Järna hardcase of the type that was always included with all the Scandinavia-sold Fender guitars and basses, this bass has been modified with a belly cut on the body and then refinished and the new thick paint has tons of checking and is peeling off in a cool way and covers an extra Jazz bass pickup route in from of the bridge, and the neck has probably received a new truss rod at some point and has had a wider than normal skunk stripe installed, and it has then been oversprayed all over, but only lightly so the remnants of the original silver logo are still there under the overspray.
All this early work including the refinish in Olympic White was done in about 1981 by Swedish luthier guru Arne Arvidsson, who was given this task from the bass player from the band Reeperbahn/Thomas DiLeva who had just purchased this bass at the music store SoundSide in Stockholm from bass collector/store clerk Roger Pincott, and at that point the bass had already received the second pickup and was stripped from finish and was bare wood.
The slab body Precision is one of Fenders rarest basses and there is a great book on the market about this subject called "Fender Bass for Britain: The History of the 1966 Slab-Bodied Precision Bass!" by Barry Matthews.
According to researchers this bass was never in a catalogue but was custom ordered by Arbiter (UK) and delivered in 2 small batches in 1966 and 1967, the first batch was no more than 25 instruments. The second batch did not have a black pickguard and often not a maple neck. A bunch of famous users picked these up including John Entwistle of the Who and Bob Daisley of Uriah Heep and Ozzy fame.
This bass has an interesting history and has been used on stages all over Sweden with the famous Västerås band Monaco Blues Band by bass player Benny From. Some pics still exist where the bass is seen.
Some parts have been replaced; repro pickguard (green instead of the original black), P-bass style pickups from Seymour Duncan, the neck has been refretted, new nut, CTS pots from the 20th week of 2007.
But the rest are original parts from 1966 including the reverse tuners, the bridge with threaded saddles, the maple cap neck with neck stamp 5OCT65C, the neck plate with a large F and the number 153939, the knurled knobs, the ash body, possibly even the brass shielding plate.
